The Jewish community around Emerald Hills

Which street you buy on decides your walk to shul, your school run and how far the Friday shopping is. Here is what is actually around, and who to ask about a specific address.

Stirling Road is the spine of this community. The markets, most of the kosher food and two of the three main shuls sit on it or a block off it, which is why the streets between Stirling and Sheridan carry a premium that has nothing to do with the houses themselves.

Nothing below is a recommendation of a kashrus standard or a school. It is a map of what is here, so you can work out what a given address costs you in minutes on a Friday afternoon and on a Shabbos morning.

Schools are the other half of it, and most of them are a bus ride rather than a walk. Two are in Hollywood itself and the rest run from Davie and Fort Lauderdale out to Miami Beach. Routes change year to year, so confirm the current one with the school before you settle on a street. Camp is worth asking about at the same time, because the summer is long and the school buses stop running.

85 of these are mapped. The rest are in the list below with their addresses; they are here, they just could not be placed on a building precisely enough to pin.

The map here takes an address, which is the question when you are looking at a house: a listing will not tell you whether the street is inside. It does not carry the weekly status, so check that with your shul before Shabbos rather than assuming it.

What families ask before choosing a street

Which Hollywood neighborhood is walkable to a shul?
Emerald Hills is the answer for most families, because Chabad of Emerald Hills sits inside the neighborhood on N Park Road and Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale and B’nai Sephardim are on Stirling Road along its southern edge. Whether your particular street is a comfortable walk depends on where in Emerald Hills it is, and the neighborhood runs from Stirling Road to Sheridan Street. Rivka Zerbib works these streets and will tell you the walk from a specific address to the shul you daven at.
Where do you buy kosher food in Hollywood, Florida?
Stirling Road. KC Market at 5650 Stirling Road, formerly Kosher Central, is the full grocery run, and The Grove Kosher Market at 2889 Stirling Road is the second. The kosher restaurants and bakeries sit on the same stretch. The Winn-Dixie on Stirling that carried a kosher section has closed, so a plan built around it needs redrawing.
Which Jewish day schools do Hollywood families use?
Two are in Hollywood itself: Ohr HaTorah Yeshiva High School on Hollywood Boulevard for boys, and Sha’arei Bina Torah Academy for girls on Taylor Street. In Broward, Brauser Maimonides in Fort Lauderdale, David Posnack in Davie, Landow Jewish Academy in Fort Lauderdale, and Hebrew Academy Community School in Margate. A lot of families bus into Miami-Dade instead, most often Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes or Yeshiva Elementary School, and some go north to Katz Yeshiva High School in Boca Raton. The full list with addresses is on this site.
Is there a school bus from Emerald Hills?
For most of the schools families here use, yes, and it is how the Miami-Dade schools are reachable at all. Routes and pickup points are set by each school and change from year to year, so confirm the current one with the school rather than assuming it, and do it before you commit to a street. A twenty minute difference in pickup is a different morning for a family with several children.
Where are the mikvaos?
Two on the Stirling Road corridor. The Young Israel mikvah at 3291 Stirling Road runs by appointment, booked online, and has a keilim mikvah on the west side of the building open during business hours. The Anidjar Mikvah at B’nai Sephardim, 3670 Stirling Road, opens daily fifteen minutes before sunset and the building is accessible.
What do families here do for camp?
Camp Gan Israel on Harrison Street is the local day camp, and a lot of families send to Machane Miami in North Miami Beach, which sits on the same run as the yeshivos down there. Worth thinking about early: the summer is long, the school buses stop running, and a camp that is a forty minute drive is a different summer from one that is ten.
Is there an eruv in Hollywood, Florida?
Yes. The Hollywood Community Eruv covers the area, and eruvfinder.com maps it and will take an address, which is what you want when you are looking at a house: a listing will not tell you, and the boundary does not follow neighborhood lines. It does not carry the weekly status, so check that with your shul before Shabbos rather than assuming it.
Who should I talk to about buying near the shuls in Hollywood?
Rivka Zerbib is a Realtor in Hollywood, Florida who works Emerald Hills, Hollywood Hills and the surrounding neighborhoods, and who knows which streets put you inside a walk and which only look like they do. Send her an address and she will tell you what it commits you to.
Why does the same house cost more a few streets over?
Proximity to a shul and to Stirling Road is priced into this market whether or not a listing says so. Two houses of the same size and age a few blocks apart can sit at different numbers because one is a walk and one is a drive. That premium is real, and knowing where it starts and stops is most of the job.

Places open, close and move. KC Market was Kosher Central, and the Winn-Dixie on Stirling that carried a kosher aisle is gone. If something here is out of date, tell Rivka and she will fix it.

Ask about a specific street

Send her an address and she will tell you the walk to the shul you daven at, whether it is inside the eruv, and which school run it commits you to.
